Self fusing silicone tape is an open-chain polymer tape that bonds to itself on contact without the use of traditional glues or adhesives . It can be used to insulate, seal and protect anything you can wrap.

Refer to our product data sheets for more information on how to properly self fusing silicone tapes. Data sheets can be found under the Downloads tab in each product.

The bond is achieved through very unique chemistry. Self-fusing silicone tapes uses a cross-linking technology that quickly links one tape molecule to another. Imagine taking two extremely small paper clips and linking them together, and then try pulling them apart. This happens in millions of places on a molecular level in the tape, thus providing a permanent bond to itself that cannot be separated once cured.

Self fusing silicone technology was originally developed for the US Military by university engineers and scientists in the 1950’s. The challenge was to find an effective alternative to standard vinyl electrical tapes and plastic “zip” ties that would be able to withstand the harshest of operating environments. They needed a durable, high temperature rated, and easy to use wrap with a “low profile” for the wiring harnesses and electrical components of the F4 Fighter Jets. Veteran aircraft mechanics refer to self-fusing silicone as “F4 Tape”.

This lining is applied during manufacturing to prevent the silicone from sticking to itself. Peel this liner away before you begin your wrap.

You can remove self fusing silicone tape easily with a knife or a scissor (preferably a utility knife for safety). Once it is removed, there is no residue left behind and you can dispose in a trash receptacle.

Self fusing silicone tape has excellent longevity and will last in conditions below 500°F for several decades in a low traffic area. If it is subject to debris or sharp objects, this may significantly reduce the lifetime of the wrap.

Self-fusing silicone tape can be purchased directly from Midsun Specialty Products for commercial case quantities.

Self fusing silicone begins bonding within seconds, but it is recommended that once wrapped, the tape be allowed to completely seal within 24 hours.

Triangular (US Military Type II) silicone tapes have a tapered edge and when wrapped on an object with a half overlap, create a smooth seamless finish. Consider using for leak sealing applications or where element intrusion is a concern.

Rectangular (Type I) tapes are uniform across and should be considered for electrical insulation applications.

Yes, we manufacture hundreds of styles of silicone tape. Visit Request a Quote and include your specifications.

Self-fusing silicone tapes with a guideline, are designed to guide the user in achieving a half overlap. A half overlap or more is preferred to maintain bond strength and aesthetic finish.

A painted line can also serve as a helpful marking system for your silicone tape uses.

Thicker silicone tapes have higher dielectric insulation properties and may improve burst pressure on leak sealing applications.

Widths under 1 inch are commonly used for wire bundling and harness assembly applications.

1-2 inch wide tapes are common for most electrical and leak sealing applications.

Wider tapes above 2 inches are preferred for large coverage areas such as large diameter pipelines, automated application, insulators or transmission bus. Thick tapes above 3 inches may require an additional person to properly install.
